How to Discover your Dream Job

When we watch Discovery Channel, National Geographic, etc. we discover many facts and details related to nature, environment, science, technology, the universe, animals and even human beings. Before the telecast of different programs on these channels, there is a lot of research work done by professionals, experts and crew members. The good thing in this profession is that every team member loves their work and are happy to do it even for long hours, days, months without a break. This shows that if you are actually working your dream job, you will never get tired no matter how big is your task. People are ready to work even for long hours. Likewise, when we have to identify our dream job there are some easy methods that will help us out to make a decision on this platform.

Firstly, go through your hobbies, interest and strength you poses in terms of academics, sports or curricular activities. It’s possible that you could be good at anything if you tried hard enough—but shouldn’t your strengths be indicative of what you should be doing? Won’t you be happier (and better at your job) if you find a career that is suited to your strengths? For example, you might think that you’re not a math person, but find out that you love using logic to solve problems. In that case, you might actually love something you’ve never tried, like coding, algorithm, etc.


Secondly, evaluate your past.Answer these questions about every place you’ve worked or went through internship. What did I like the most and the least bout the company/organization? What did I like the most and the least about the company culture? What did I like most and least about my manager? What did I like most and least about the people I worked with? What was the most challenging thing about working there? When was I the happiest or the proudest? What was my biggest accomplishment? What did I like the most and the least about my responsibilities?

Your answers will help you clarify what you liked most and least about previous workplaces so that you can look for similar or different characteristics in the future.
Same evaluation can be done by freshers or students who are trying to figure out their dream job. They can go through their past experience in terms of curricular activities, roles they played in team or individual events. What they like most in the competition? You don’t have to keep doing the kind of work you’ve always done, but you can analyze your past work to figure out exactly what you liked, what you didn’t like, and what situations bring out your best work and happiest self.



Thirdly, talk to people. I prefer to speak to an expert when it comes to planning your career in a profession you have chosen. It has been found that whenever people find it difficult to make decisions, an expert advise helps to figure out the issue in most cases. Go on informational interviews of such professionals and learn about their career paths and advice. Ask about their job, industry, and professional aspirations. Always come with questions in advance so that you get the most out of the meeting or phone call as possible. And don’t limit yourself to people you know or are connected to in some way. Go on LinkedIn, Facebook and read people’s job descriptions or go online and read interviews and articles about people you admire. Before you set your heart on a career, or completely rule it out, make sure you find out what the job is like on the day- today.

Fourthly, use social networking as a tool to keep yourself updated for the profession you are willing to move ahead with as a career. Watch online tutorials, videos, follow experts in LinkedIn, Facebook.
Make best use of technology to have as much possible knowledge of the industry you are willing to make your career. It will help you to understand the type of work environment in different industries and that will be a good fit for you and the lifestyle you hope to. It helped me a lot to make a right decision when I was in between my career with a high stress level and problems.

Lastly, I must say do what makes you happy. Don't choose the most “prestigious” job just so you could impress people. Instead of choosing the most “impressive” offer—something you had been prone to do in the past—choose the one that will make you happy and allow you to grow and learn.
